Growth Potential of Logistics & Transport Sector in India




Container traffic estimated to reach 960 million tonnes by 2013-14. Of the Indian rail-road transportation turn over of rs. 778 billion, container traffic accounts for 10 percent and is expected to grow by 25 percent during 2007.


Roads carry about 70% of the freight and 85% of passenger traffic. With focus on the improvement of roads and planned investment, the sector is expected to grow at 10% by 2010.


During 2004-2005 airports handled 60 million passengers and 1.3 million tonnes of cargo. The Civil Aviation Ministry’s expected new policy to develop domestic airport capacity for international Cargo handling will add new dimensions to logistic and transport management.

Objective Of LTI 2008

Logistics in India is poised for a significant leap forward in the coming years. The Logistics Industry size has touched the level of $ 90 billion and is expected to reach $ 110 billion by 2010. To tap the potential of the booming Industry, LTI 2008 would provide an International B2B platform for the professionals from the Industry to meet and brain - storm issues on the Indian Logistics Sector.

Major Opportunities
  • Express Cargo industry has built up substantial strength in the last decade and the service industry is credited with a revenue around Rs. 71,000 million during 2005-06. The industry is expected to grow at the rate of 20 percent for the next five years.
  • Domestic and international business demands greater dynamism of the air cargo industry, growing at 20% presently.
  • Possibility of hiking FDI limit in the air cargo and non-scheduled operations to 74% from the current level of 49 % is expected to give a fillip to the industry.
  • Cargo segment has registered rapid growth compared to courier service.
  • Ministry of Shipping has initiated an ambitious National Maritime Development Program which will improve modern port infrastructure.
  • Organized retail is expected to cross US$22 billion by 2010 from the current turnover of US$4 billion.
  • Warehouse facilities for the growing retail enterprises are being augmented.
  • Public Private Partnership is growing at a rapid rate for infrastructure funding.
Rail Tech Asia 2008
The Indian Railways are liberalizing their policy to sustain the productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness and has preferred an auditions modernization plan to be implemented in the next five years. Railways are handling 6.7 billion passengers and 667 million tones of freight per year. The prospects for upgrading modernization, electrifications computerization and expansion of railways metros and rapid transport systems etc are very bright, Development of separate dedicated freight corridors for the freight and passenger segments, priority to create additional capacities, high speed traction and overall imports are on the card extending tremendous business opportunities for domestic and international players it the final.
